This is a list of questions sent to the Gourlay relatives still living.
1. When did the Gourlay's come to Canada?
2. Why did they leave Scotland?
3. Who all came, and who stayed back in Scotland?
4. Where is Kirkcaldy Scotland?
5. Is there anything else of note about the Family. Famous individuals,
important events in history that someone in our Family has a part in,
etc....

Robert answered with the following.

HEY ! I told you all this a long time ago. But, OK here we go again...... William Allan came to Windsor, Ont. in 1927 with a nephew James Finlay, an uncle to Maureen,. Will's wife Janet came over in 1929 with 3 little girls - your grandmother was one of them, your Aunt Jean another ( her name is now STRAITH, not as you have it spelled below) The 3rd daughter May died in 1950 or 51. Dad was bound for Denver but since May was handicapped the good ol' U.S. of A. wouldn't let them in so he located in Windsor. Ad, being a typical immigrant of the day was taken in by the ads in Scotland about waving fields of grain and streets paved with golden opportunity. They didn't tell him the Depression was about to hit in Nov. 1929. Betty will tell you stories about this. I didn't come along until 1939. Who stayed back? A whole bunch of sisters and cousins. One of those sisters was Mary Ann (Maureen's paternal grandmother). Mo's Dad Robert, came over
somewhat latter than Will & Jim. Jim and Bob had another brother George who came over about 1948 with a wife and 2 sons. These guys were cops in Detroit. Both retired now, I think. I'm not going to answer question # 4. If you are a golfer you would have heard of St. Andrew's. That's where golf was invented. And that's where Kirkcaldy is ! Actually it's across the Firth of Fourth from Edinburgh.
As for #5 , your Dad and his Dad are the only ones I know of who have any importance. Actually, the story of Will & Janet would make interesting reading and Betty and Jean would be better sources than I.

Part of another email from Robbin

. Dad was born in 1892 and came to Canada in 1927 after
serving in WW II and Marrying Janet Taylor who was originally from northern
England but don't remind her of that ....she grew up in Kirkcaldy and was
adamant that she was Scottish. My 3 sisters were also born in Kirkcaldy but I
came along in 1939 in Windsor Ontario. [ this makes me a better Scot than
all of them! Why? Because I saved the fare.]
