During 1972 David and Jeannene were both working for WWMT, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. David was a part-time production assistant and Jeannene was Controller. They talked some and recognized each other during work. Then in January they were both playing basketball for a charity event WWMT was participating in. During the game, David's knee, that he had hurt during his senior year in high school, was twisted. Being part-time and a student at Western, Jeannene knew that he would not have insurance to cover the knee injury. After the game, Jeannene took David to the emergency room at Bronson hospital to have the knee looked at. During their wait to be looked at, they started talking about their religious beliefs. David asked Jeannene what she was and she said she was Catholic. David said he was a Christian. Indignantly, Jeannene said a Catholic was a Christian, too. They then started talking about it and Jeannene explained she was looking for a place to go to church.

Around March, Jeannene received four tickets to the Pistons/Bulls basketball game. Knowing David had never seen a pro basketball game, she asked David if he would like the other three tickets for him and his friends. The game was on 4/12/93. David said he would like the tickets and wouldn't mind that I had the other ticket. During April while discussing going to the game, Jeannene explained that her brother, Jerry, and his family was coming over 4/11/93 for Easter dinner. David kind of invited himself but didn't to dinner.
