James' immigration card states that he arrived in the US via Detroit on the D&W Ferry on 24 Dec 1929.
James served in the US army during WW II in the 2nd Armored Division, 3rd Army under General Patton. The following information was recorded by him in a Spanish dictionary which his sister Alexandra has in her possession. His address: "A" Btry
14 (a) F.A.Bn., A.P.O 252, c/o P.M.N.Y.N.Y., 1740 N. Mason Ave, Chicago, IL. He served in:
1) Africa, arriving in Casablanca on Dec. 24, 1942; followed by Robat Morroco (Feb. 15, 1943), Pt. Lyautey, Oran, Arzew, and Tunis Bizerte [launching pad for Sicily].
2) Italy, arriving in Sicily on July 10, 1943; followed by Licata - Canicatti, Agrigento, Castelvetrano, Palermo - Isola della Feminne, and at some point Monreale [i.e., this city was written of to the side in his journal].
3) Great Britian (Nov. 26, 1943), stationed at Liverpool, Tidworth, Salisbury, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Dysart, Bouremouth, Southampton and Weymouth. [It appears that he may have visited many of these cities and was not stationed
there.]
4) France, arriving in Normandy on June 9, 1944 - landing in Cherbourgh.
5) Germany, arriving in Berlin in July 1945.
He was discharged on Oct. 14, 1945 from Camp Grant, IL.
As a side note: he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He also won a cartoon contest while in France which provided him with lodging on the French Riveria. Somehow he managed to get there and there is a picture to prove it!
